Can I keep my email/Mbox/other UMICH access after I graduate or leave U-M?

Problem/Question

Can I keep my email after I graduate or leave U-M?

Overview

Alumni and Retirees retain access to Google Apps, email, calendar, wireless, and other tools, but eligibility to receive some U-M computing services is lost or changes for services such as H: Drive storage space, M+Box, and UPRINT access.

Solution

Note: The following is for students who do not complete their first term (students who do not qualify as alumni)

Students who leave without completing at least one term lose their affiliation with the university when they are no longer listed by their department as Active in Program. They lose access to U-M computing services after a grace period.

  • When the student affiliation is removed from the person's MCommunity Directory profile, an automated email notice is sent letting them know that they will lose access to some computing services in 30 days.
  • Thirty days later, access to the services listed in the email ends.
  • The uniqname and directory profile remain active for a little over a year to allow the former student access to their university record.

Former students who have completed at least one term of a degree-granting program are eligible for alumni status and can request it by contacting Gift & Records Administration at 888-518-7888 or via a web request.

Note: The following is for faculty and staff whose university employment ends

Faculty and staff whose employment with U-M is terminated, and who have no other affiliation with the university, lose eligibility for U-M computing services. They lose access after a grace period.

Note that faculty and staff who are also alumni are eligible to keep some services because of their alumni status. They keep the same services as retirees.

  • When the faculty or staff affiliation is removed from the person's MCommunity Directory profile, an automated email notice is sent letting them know that they will lose access to some computing services in 30 days.
  • Thirty days later, access to the services listed in the email ends.
  • The uniqname and directory profile remain active for a little over a year. This allows the former employee to forward their U-M email to another account, log in to Wolverine Access for their W-2 form, and perform other such transitional activities. (Former employees who have another affiliation, such as alumni or sponsored affiliate, may continue to use some computing services.)

Former employees who need continued access to departmental systems must make arrangements with their department to become sponsored. Should they later return to the university—whether as a sponsored person, employee, or student—their uniqname can be reactivated (because there is sufficient identity information on file to verify their identity).
