Problem/Question

How do I set up Okta FastPass on a UM‑Dearborn Windows computer?

Overview

Okta FastPass allows UM‑Dearborn users to sign in to University of Michigan services without entering their UMICH password by using Windows Hello (PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition).

This article explains the basic steps to set up Okta FastPass on a  Windows‑based computer.

To use Okta FastPass, you must:

Solution

Step 1: Set Up Windows Hello

Windows Hello is required for Okta FastPass.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Accounts
  3. Click Sign-in options
  4. Set up a Windows Hello PIN
    • You may also configure fingerprint or facial recognition if available

Note: If Windows Hello is already configured, you can skip this step.

Step 2: Install Okta Verify Using Software Center (UM‑Dearborn Computers)

  1. Open Software Center

  2. Find Okta Verify

  3. Click Install
  4. Once installed, open Okta Verify

Note: If Okta Verify is already installed, simply open the app and continue.

Step 3: Set Up Okta FastPass

  1. In the Okta Verify application, click Get Started.

  2. Review the “How it works” information and click Next.

  3. If the account URL is not auto‑populated, enter:
    https://okta.umich.edu
    Then click Next.

  4. When the Okta sign‑in page opens, enter your uniqname and click Next.

  5. Select Okta Verify – Get a push notification and approve the sign‑in request.

  6. When prompted, click Enable to enable FastPass.

  7. Complete the authentication prompt as directed.

Okta FastPass is now set up on your Windows device. Continue to the next step to test your FastPass sign‑in.

Step 4: Test Okta FastPass

  1. Open a private/incognito browser window.

  2. Go to: the Okta Login Page (or another U‑M service that uses Okta sign‑in).

  3. Enter your uniqname.

    • You may be prompted to enter your password the first time.
  4. When prompted to choose a sign‑in method, select Okta Verify – FastPass.

    • If FastPass is not listed, click Verify with something else, then select Okta Verify – FastPass.
  5. Complete the authentication prompt (for example, Windows Hello).

  6. Once authentication is complete, FastPass will become your default sign‑in method for that browser.

Note for Chrome and Edge users:
You may see a pop‑up asking for permission to look for and connect to devices on your local network.

  • Click Allow.
  • This prompt appears only once.
  • If you click Block, Okta FastPass will not work in that browser until permissions are reset.

If sign‑in completes successfully without repeated password prompts, Okta FastPass is working correctly.
