Overview

Muting in Slack allows users to stop receiving notifications from specific channels or direct messages (DMs). This can be useful for reducing distractions and focusing on more important conversations.


Solution

To mute a channel in Slack, follow these steps:

  1. Open Slack: Launch the Slack application on your desktop or mobile device.
  2. Select the Channel/DM: Click on the one you want to mute from the list on the left side of the screen.
  3. Open Settings: Click on the #channel-name or Name located at the top to open the Settings menu.
  4. Select Mute Option: In the Settings menu, select the 🕭 option to mute the channel. This will prevent notifications from appearing for that channel, but you can still access and read messages in it.

Alternatively, you can mute all Slack notifications for a set period by entering "Do Not Disturb" (DND) mode from the notifications tab next to the team name

  1. Click your profile picture in the sidebar.

  2. Go up to Pause Notifications
  3. Choose a time frame from the menu, or select Custom to set your own.
