Question

How do I set a Virtual Background in Zoom Meetings?

Overview

Zoom provides students, faculty, and staff with the ability to message and chat with each other through videotelephony and online chat services through a cloud-based peer-to-peer software platform.

Solution

Zoom has extensive documentation available at Changing your Virtual Background image.

To display a Virtual Background and add image options:

  • Open your Zoom Desktop Client
  • Click on the little Icon for yourself in the upper right corner
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on Virtual Background
  • You can click on the different preloaded pictures to see how they look, or you can click on the little + to add your own images.

Note: This feature works best with a green screen and uniform lighting, to allow Zoom to detect the difference between you and your background. If you don't have this, the virtual background will work, but you might notice some odd behavior.

There are no size restrictions when adding your own virtual backgrounds, but we recommend cropping the image to match the aspect ratio of your camera before uploading it.

Example: If your camera is set to 16:9, an image of 1280 pixels by 720 px or 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels would work well.
