Dropbox: Using Selective Sync Folders (Personal / Sensitive Information)

Problem/Question

How do I manually change which folders I sync using the Dropbox application?


Overview

After setting up the Dropbox application on your machine you can change which folders are synced to it. There may be some personal or sensitive information that you do not want to be synced, this guide will show you how to manually change that. This is called Selective Sync on Windows and Sync on Mac, this allows you to choose which Dropbox folders to store on or remove from your computer's hard drive.

Solution

For Windows:

1. Click the Dropbox icon in your taskbar.
2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
3. Click Preferences.
4. Click the Sync tab.
5. Under Selective Sync (Windows), click Select folders.
6. Check the folders you’d like saved on your hard drive. Uncheck the folders you’d like removed.
7. Click Update.

 

For Mac:

1. Click the Dropbox icon in your menu bar in the top right corner of your screen.
2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
3. Click Preferences.
4. Click the Sync tab.
5. Under Select folders to sync to this Mac (Mac), click Select folders.
6. Check the folders you’d like saved on your hard drive. Uncheck the folders you’d like removed.
7. Click Update.

For Linux:

1. Click the small Dropbox icon, which is typically at the top or bottom of your screen.
2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the upper-right corner.
3. Click Preferences.
3. Click the Sync tab.
4. Check the folders you’d like saved on your hard drive. Uncheck the folders you’d like removed.
5. Click Update.
