Problem/Question
How can I get access to Group Share folders
Overview
Groupshare access (S: Drive) is controlled via an Mcommunity group that has the prefix "umd-share". The S: drive mapping is automatically applied when logging in, but permission to share folders needs to be done by a group owner. When someone is added as a member to a specific Mcommuity Group, they wait 15 minutes and open the S: drive mapping to see the folder. Thus, in almost all situations, there is no need to manually map the network drive.
To get access to a groupshare folder, you must be added to the Mcommunity Group as a member. Access to grroupshares is handled by someone (or multiple people) in the department associated with the groupshare folder
Solution
Please choose from the following 2 scenarios:
1. If you are a Staff/Faculty member needing access to a groupshare.
Your department admin can add you as a member to the associated MCommunity groupshare Group. Please contact them first for assistance. Once you are added, please wait 15-20 minutes for access to replicate.
Note: On Windows Devices, the folder will appear after a reboot. If on a Mac, please see the following guide on mapping network drive on MacOS
2. If you are a dept admin needing to add someone to a Groupshare
- Log in to the MCommunity Directory and click My Groups.
- Click the appropriate share group for which you want to add a member.
- Click Add Members in the membership section of the Group page.
- Type the uniqname of the member you want to add in the U-M Member field
- Click Save.
