Problem
No sound from the classroom speakers after connecting a Mac to the Extron system.
- Video shows on the projector or display, but audio still plays from the MacBook's built-in speakers.
- No audio at all after connecting, even with the volume turned up.
Overview
macOS does not always switch its sound output when a new display is connected. The Extron system sends classroom audio over the same HDMI or USB-C connection as the video. The Mac can keep playing sound through its built-in speakers, or whichever device it used last.
Switching the Mac's sound output to the Extron device by hand fixes this in most cases. Try it first, before restarting the Mac or the room system. This works on any recent version of macOS (Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, Tahoe).
Solution
Set the Mac's sound output to EXTRON audio. Make sure the Mac is connected to the room's HDMI or USB-C cable and the Extron system is on first.
- Click the Sound (speaker) icon in the menu bar at the top right of the screen.
- If it is not there, click Control Center (the two-switch icon), then click the arrow next to Sound.
- Under Output, click EXTRON audio.

Option 2: System Settings
- Click the Apple menu > System Settings, then click Sound in the sidebar.
- Under Output & Input, make sure the Output tab is selected, then click EXTRON audio.

EXTRON audio is now highlighted as the selected output:

- Play a short video or sound and confirm it comes through the room speakers. Check that Output volume is up and Mute is unchecked.
If EXTRON audio does not appear in the list, unplug the cable, wait 5 seconds, and plug it back in. The name can vary by room; it may show as the display or projector name, or as "HDMI" or "DisplayPort." Pick that entry instead.
