Question
How do I install and set up UM-Dearborn’s GlobalProtect VPN client? When do I need to use a VPN?
Overview
The University of Michigan - Dearborn’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a secure, encrypted connection between your device and the U-M network in order to enable access to university resources from untrusted networks.
The service enables users to:
- extend the university’s private, secure, and managed network to their personal devices when using off campus networks.
- send and receive university or personal data through a dedicated and encrypted connection across shared or public networks.
- access applications or data which require an on-campus connection (e.g. academic resources, on campus computer and storage services, etc.).
The UM-Dearborn VPN client is Palo Alto’s GlobalProtect. Users that are connecting through the VPN will be required to authenticate via Duo Two-Factor authentication.
Installation and Connection - macOS
University managed Macs will already have the GlobalProtect VPN client installed during the imaging process. For personally owned or self-managed macOS devices:
- Launch a web browser and go to https://umvpn.umd.umich.edu
- Log in with your U-M Uniqname and UMICH password.
- Download the macOS agent.
- Once downloaded to your computer, run the set-up wizard to install the GlobalProtect client. Administrative rights are required during the installation.
- After installing the GlobalProtect client, you may be prompted to explicitly allow the GlobalProtect application to load with the following message:
- On the Security & Privacy dialog, click the padlock icon to make changes, and then select App Store and identified developers in the Allow apps downloaded from area. Click Allow.
- To log in to GlobalProtect, you will be prompted for a portal address. For UM-Dearborn, it is “umvpn.umd.umich.edu”.
- After entering the portal, enter your U-M Uniqname and UMICH password.
- In the Gateway dropdown, select the “umvpn.umd.umich.edu” portal in order to connect. When connecting, you will be prompted to authenticate via Duo Two Factor.
- The GlobalProtect application will change its status to “Connected - You are securely connected to the corporate network.”
- In order to disconnect from the GlobalProtect client, press the disconnect button. Your network traffic will no longer tunnel through the client.
