Windows 10 - Adding a Network Printer

Summary

For adding network printers to your Windows 10 machine.

Body

Overview

Here on campus we manage our Office printers through MCommunity Active Control Lists (ACL), which allow users to access their network printers from any university owned machines they sign into.  To be added to an ACL for specific printer access, please contact your department admin for assistance Once you are added to the ACL, it will take 15-30 minutes to process in the system. A reboot is required but the printer should map automatically for you during your next log-in.  If it does not, follow these steps to see what printers you have access to, and to connect to them.

Process

If you've been added to the print group, please follow these steps from a computer connected to the campus network:

1. On Desktop, click on This PC

2. In the address bar, type: \\umd-ps1.adsroot.itcs.umich.edu

3. Find the printer that you are trying to connect to and click on it to add it.

If you receive the following, the printer will be connected and visible in Printers and Scanners

If your receive an Access Denied error, the likely cause could be one of the following:

  • You are not a member of the MCommunity Print ACL associated with the printer. Contact your department admin or use this service
  •  If recently added, please allow 15-30 minutes processing time. Reboot to see if printer automatically maps.
  • Device must be on a campus network to access print services. Please connect to MWireless or hard-wire to network.
  • There could be an issue with the printer or ACL. Please use this service for additional troubleshooting Printer Problem
