Problem/Question
How do I add a university network printer to my Windows 11 Device.
Overview
On campus, office printers are managed using MCommunity Active Control Lists (ACLs). ACLs determine which users have access to specific network printers and allow printers to follow you across university‑owned Windows computers you sign into.
To be granted access to a printer, you must be added to the appropriate MCommunity print group. Please contact your department administrator for assistance with being added.
Once you have been added:
- Allow 15–30 minutes for the change to process
- Restart your computer
- The printer may map automatically the next time you sign in
If the printer does not automatically appear, follow the steps below to manually connect and view the printers you have access to.
- Printer access is tied to user group membership, not the device itself
- Personal devices may have additional restrictions and may require different steps
- Always verify the exact printer name, usually found on a label on the printer
Solution
Note: These steps must be completed while connected to the campus network (wired or MWireless).
-
Open File Explorer
- You can do this by clicking the folder icon on the taskbar or pressing Windows key + E
-
In the address bar at the top of File Explorer, enter the following and press Enter:
\\umd-ps1.adsroot.itcs.umich.edu
-
A list of available printers will appear.
- Locate the printer you need (based on the printer name provided by your department).
- Double‑click the printer to add it.
-
If the connection is successful, the printer will be added and will appear under: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners
If your receive an Access Denied error, the likely cause could be one of the following:
- You are not a member of the MCommunity Print ACL associated with the printer. Contact your department admin or use this print access service if you do not know who to contact and we will look it up for you.
- If recently added, please allow 15-30 minutes processing time. Reboot to see if printer automatically maps.
- Device must be on a campus network to access print services. Please connect to MWireless or hard-wire to network.
- There could be an issue with the printer or ACL. Please use this service for additional troubleshooting Printer Problem
