Installing macOS updates: On Machines with macOS 12 Monterey and beyond [System Preferences]

Question

I am already running macOS 12 Monterey, how do I update my system? Nothing is showing up in the Managed Software Center.

Overview

Starting with macOS 12 Monterey and going forward all the updates will be done through the Systems Preferences, not the Managed Software Center. This is only in regard to the OS updates, any software updated outside of that will still be found in the Managed Software Center.

Solution

Prior to installing the new or updated OS:

  • Set aside at least an hour for the installation to run, your computer will be unavailable during this period of time.
  • Plug in your computer to a power source.
  • Connect your computer to a wired Internet connection (if possible).
  • Install all pending updates available in the Managed Software Center.

Installing the new OS

1. From the Apple menu in the upper left hand corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You should see the macOS name, such as macOS Monterey or macOS Big Sur, then click the Software Updates button.

2. Click on Update Now

3. Allow the update to download.

4. Click Restart Now to install the update

5. Let the update install, a progress bar will be shown and a time frame will be given. The system may restart a few times during the process but just wait.

It should be complete when you see the log in screen.
