How to setup a Softphone @ UM-Dearborn
Overview
Turn Your Computer Into a Telephone. Cisco IP Communicator is a Windows PC-based softphone application that lets you use your personal computer to make premium voice and video calls. With a USB headset or USB speakerphone and Cisco IP Communicator, you can easily access your university phone number and voicemail.
IPC is the only choice available for Call/Contact Center Lines.

Solution
Note:
- Admin access is needed on your machine to complete each installation. If you do not have admin access, please contact the ITS Service Desk
- U-M Dearborn VPN (student, faculty, and staff profile) is required when off the UM Network.
Note: IP Communicator is for use with PC only. ICD (call center) users must have IP Communicator open to use Cisco Finnesse.
- Download the IP Communicator.
- Open the .exe file.
- Run on your PC. Follow the prompts to complete the download.
- Click the Cisco IP Communicator Wizard and follow the instructions:
- At the "Audio Tuning Wizard" click Next. The Audio is dependent on your devices audio or an external audio device such as headphones.
- Select your preferred audio device, click Next.
- Adjust Listening Volume. Click Play.Click Next.
- Adjust Microphone Volume. Click Test. Click Next.
- Click Finish to complete the Audio Tuning Wizard. Once complete, the Cisco IP SoftPhone will appear on the desktop of your PC.
- Setup your device by clicking the Settings icon at the top.
- Select Preferences.
- Select the Network tab. Note If settings are grayed out, run the program as an Administrator.
- Select Use this Device Name.
- Type your 10 digit number with the AB, example: 7346470000AB
- Select Use these TFTP servers:
- Dearborn
- TFTP Server 1: 141.215.8.5
- TFTP Server 2: 141.215.5.102
- Click OK and wait for IP Communicator to configure.
- Configure Audio by clicking Settings icon.
- Click Preferences.
- Click Audio Tab.
- Choose the appropriate device for the headset, speakerphone, handset and ringer. These will be the same for all boxes. WARNING! Checking Optimize for low bandwidth or accessing the Network or Advance buttons may cause connection issues.
- Click OK.
