Problem/Question

I cannot connect to the VPN on my device.


Overview

The University of Michigan’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a secure, encrypted connection between your device and the U-M network and enables access to university resources from untrusted networks. 


Solution

For various reasons the connection to the VPN may fail. Here are some possible resolutions to try to correct your problem.

  1. Make sure you have setup the connection correctly through GlobalProtect Application. For campus computers this can be downloaded and installed through Software Center (Windows) or Managed Software Center (Mac). On personal devices it can downloaded from the website https://umvpn.umd.umich.edu
    Here are the setup instructions:
  2. Verify that you have typed in the VPN correctly: umvpn.umd.umich.edu and you are using your Uniqname and Kerberos password to login.
     
  3. Make sure you do not have any security software that may be blocking it.
     
  4. Some Internet Providers block VPN connections by default, WOW Internet is known to do that. If you have WOW Internet you will need to contact their support to allow the VPN connection.
     
  5. Mas OS Catalina is know to have problems connecting, if that is the case try to connect manually. The setup is Manually Connecting to VPN on a Mac
     
  6. If GlobalProtect is trying to connect to the Best Available Gateway when there is none listed let it fail then afterwards select the umvpn.umd.umich.edu for the Gateway and it should connect. To retain the correct Gateway setting, open the settings page of GlobalProtect and select umvpn.umd.umich.edu as the Preferred Gatway.
