How do I upgrade my Operating System (OS) on my University Mac through the Managed Software Center?

The Managed Software Center is an application that is automatically installed on UM-Dearborn imaged and managed Macs. It handles system updates and allows the user to self-install software from a large catalogue, including the Adobe Creative Cloud suite and major MacOS upgrade packages.

Using the Managed Software Center does not require being connected to a UM-Dearborn wireless network or using the Global Protect VPN.

Prior to installing the new OS:

  • Set aside at least an hour for the installation to run, your computer will be unavailable during this period of time.
  • Plug in your computer to a power source.
  • Connect your computer to a wired Internet connection (if possible).
  • Install all pending updates available in the Managed Software Center.
  • Make sure your hard drive has 12.5GB of free space available or up to 18.5 GB of storage space when upgrading from OS X 10.10 Yosemite or earlier. The steps to check how much hard drive space you have is below.

1. From the Menu Bar at the top of the screen, click the Apple Icon and then "About This Mac."

2. From this screen, click Storage.

3. From here you can see the available space. If you do not have enough available, please delete some of your unwanted files or empty the trash to make space. You can also move files to external storage.

Installing the new OS

  1.  Click the Block M in the Mac Menu Bar. Once there, click on Managed Software Center.

  2. Click on the Updates tab.

  3. Find the update that says Install macOS [Catalina, Mojave, or High Sierra] depending on what version your Mac is being updated to.Click the circle with the plus in it, this will download the update.

  4. After downloading, you will get this screen click update and then hit log out and update

  5. Let the update install, a time frame will be given under that bar.

When it completes you will be taken to the log in screen, you can log back in.
